If you’re building a wall or frame specifically to suit a barn door install, you’ll need to add nogging at door height plus 45mm to align with the centre of the track. This ensures we have solid support to anchor the barn door hardware.
Important note:Even with proper nogging, a mounting timber is still required. Why?
Barn door bolts don’t hold well in just plasterboard or drywall.
The mounting timber provides extra strength and stability.
It also helps clear skirtings and architraves, ensuring the door slides smoothly without catching.
Planning your wall with this in mind will save time and ensure a flawless finish for your barn door setup!
When it comes to our MDF timber framed painted doors, we take pride in the craftsmanship and quality that goes into every piece. However, one thing to keep in mind is that due to the nature of MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard), achieving a perfectly smooth surface in the grooves can be quite challenging.
MDF is an engineered wood product made from wood fibers, wax, and resin, giving it a dense and uniform structure. While this consistency makes it a great material for painted finishes, it also means that certain areas—like grooves—can absorb paint and primer differently, leading to subtle texture variations. Unlike 2-pack finishes used on cabinetry, which create a high-gloss, ultra-smooth look through an intensive spraying and baking process, our doors have a hand-finished touch that gives them a more natural appearance.
Over time, we have refined our techniques to minimise these imperfections as much as possible, but this is the best result achievable with our handcrafted process. That said, we are always exploring new alternatives and improvements to enhance our finishes while maintaining the unique quality of our doors.

The mounting timber we use is 90mm x 18mm and is essential for providing the necessary support for both the tracks and the door. It is securely attached to the wall studs, ensuring stability and durability for the entire barn door system.
For more details about the gap between the barn door and the wall, please refer to the “Why is there a gap between the barn door and the wall?” question in the “About the Barn Doors” section of our FAQs.
Barn doors are designed to sit on the outside of the wall, which naturally creates a small gap between the door and the wall. This gap is influenced by several factors, including:
To ensure the best coverage, we craft our doors approximately 100mm wider than the opening. While this effectively covers the space, a gap between the door and the wall will always remain because of the door’s positioning on the exterior of the wall.
At this stage, we do not offer additional products to reduce this gap. Based on our expertise, we have found that such solutions are not efficient in achieving the desired result.
If you have further questions or would like more information about our installation process, feel free to reach out to our team—we’re always here to help!
Brisbane Barn Doors have made the decision to remove Ghost Tracks and Magic Barn Doors from our product catalogue. After custom-making and installing this system for a few customers, we found that the overall quality and finish did not meet our high standards. We are committed to providing premium products that reflect the craftsmanship and durability our customers expect.

Our paint-grade barn doors are built to be incredibly solid and sturdy. Each door is constructed with a durable timber frame and MDF cladding, ensuring long-lasting strength and resilience. We use only high-quality materials to guarantee that our doors can stand up to everyday use without compromising on style. These doors are not only aesthetically pleasing but are also designed to handle the wear and tear of daily life.
If your soft closer system is experiencing issues, you can often resolve them using an Allen key (please note the Allen key just be the one left behind during installation or the one that comes with our soft closer kit 2mm). Simply adjust the system by raising the catcher on the door, which typically resolves the problem. If the catcher is at full extension you can lower the receiver on the track slightly.
See helpful video here. If you still encounter issues after attempting this solution, please reach out to us via email at info@brisbanebarndoors.com.au.
You will need a bulkhead (minimum 200mm) for the barn door tracks to go on. At this stage we are not doing ceiling sliding doors, or installing bulkheads as part of our installation package.
Currently, glasswork isn’t within our scope. However, we’re open to exploring crafting the door itself, while you or a glass contractor could handle the glass installation aspect. Let’s discuss the options further.
We offer a diverse range of barn doors crafted from high-quality materials to suit various tastes and needs. Our barn doors are primarily constructed from MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard), renowned for its durability and versatility.
We proudly source our Tasmanian Oak and Blackwood from Britton Timbers, one of Australia’s most trusted timber suppliers.
Tasmanian Oak is known for its light, warm tones and clean, straight grain — perfect for a softer, airy finish. Blackwood offers rich chocolate hues and striking natural variation, creating a deeper, more dramatic statement.
Both timbers are strong, stable, and machine beautifully, making them ideal for custom doors and architectural features. As natural hardwoods, small variations, grain movement, and minor imperfections may be present — these are not faults, but part of the authentic character that makes each piece unique.
Each door showcases a rustic yet refined look, combining genuine timber character with a premium finish.
For a touch of sophistication, we also offer doors made from Veneer Convex or Oak Convex, adding elegance to your space with their premium finishes.
As for our barn door tracks, we provide options to complement any design scheme. Most of our tracks feature a matte black finished metal, offering a sleek and modern aesthetic. Alternatively, we offer tracks in white, satin gold metal, or stainless steel finishes, providing versatility to match diverse interior styles.
Whether you’re seeking durability, elegance, or versatility, our selection of barn doors and tracks ensures you’ll find the perfect fit for your space.
Our standard barn doors, measuring 2150×1000, are priced at an average of $525 for the door itself. For local areas in Greater Brisbane, installation starts at approximately $400 for a standard door. Prices may vary based on factors such as size, design, and location.
Even though our doors provide privacy, they are external sliding doors, so they don’t fully seal. We make the doors oversized to allow for this, but they will never completely be soundproof. Our doors are 42mm thick so thicker than a normal door.
We are only doing interior barn doors. None of our doors are suitable for exterior purposes.
Barn doors are not typically designed for locking, but a simple cabin hook can do the trick! For added privacy and security, privacy latches are also an efficient solution for your barn door system. Enquire today!
